How To Know – Genuine Italian Dining

June 3, 2010

Sometimes, you could be mislead into thinking that you know about Italian cuisine just because you eat at those Italian restaurants. The reason for this is because more than 90% of Italian restaurants do not really pass as genuine. So you are probably eating at those American-Italian restaurants that may serve Italian dishes but taste otherwise. You have been eating so many Americanized Italian dishes that you do not really know how Italian spaghetti really tastes like. But once you know what Italian cuisine really is, it won’t be hard at all for you to start busting those American-Italian restaurants.

First thing to be on the look out for is the flavor. Simplicity is the key with Italian cuisine. Don’t expect to try an Italian dish that overpowers your palette. You will of course be used to eating dishes that are seasoned very strongly with too much spices and additives so that they just explode in your mouth.  But Italian food is flavorful but with restraint. Even in the strong Italian dishes, there is still the element of balance that pervades in the entire flavor. Italian cuisine is all about letting the delicate and subtle flavors of the ingredients just shine through and not hide them at all. You can always know if you are really in an original Italian restaurant by sampling their pasta sauce. When you eat a dish like spaghettini ai frutti di mare, you must not taste one component like the pasta sauce overpowering the others. Pasta sauces in Italian dishes are not there to mask the flavor of the pasta or the other components like in this case the mixed seafood. The next thing you should take note is whether the pasta sauce sticks to the pasta, if so you are eating homemade pasta. Homemade pastas are unlike dried pastas in that sauces stick to it a lot better. Eating homemade pasta is also a lot lighter on the stomach so you won’t have that heavy feeling after finishing your meal.

Gourmet Italian food always includes desserts, so it is wise to know how original tastes like. Italians are famed for mixing in different fruit zests and peels in their cakes and pastries. Sometimes they may add some fruit liquor but one thing that you will notice in Italian desserts is that they are taste light. This is because they do not add that much sugar, unlike the Americanized versions of these sweets. They even do not use heavy cream or margarine which are commonly used in American desserts. Like their savory counterparts, Italian desserts show the flavors of the ingredients and not just simple sweetening thing up.

Italian regional cuisine is just wonderful.
